How to Determine When You Registered as Self-Employed to Ensure You’re Meeting Key Deadlines and Tax Payments

To find out when you registered as self-employed, you can use one of the following methods:

Each person's situation is unique, so use your own judgment when applying this advice. For personalized assistance, consult a qualified professional to avoid potential penalties.

1. Check Your Paperwork

When you first registered as self-employed, HMRC issued you a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number in a letter. The date on this letter will give you an indication of when you registered. Additionally, your official start date as a self-employed individual should be noted in your welcome letter from HMRC (also known as a SA250).

2. Call HMRC

You can call HMRC at 0300 200 3310 to request information about your registration date. They will have records of when you became self-employed.

Be sure to have your UTR number handy when contacting HMRC to pass

security checks.

If you’re checking your registration date to determine if you need to complete a tax return, logging into your HMRC online account is a straightforward way to find out when your next tax return is due.
