Understanding National Insurance Numbers and How to Apply

A National Insurance Number (NINO) is essential not only for working in the UK but also for claiming various state benefits.

If you were born and live in the UK, you'll automatically receive a NINO shortly before your 16th birthday. The NINO is sent by post. While you may have previously received a National Insurance card, these were discontinued in 2011.

If you're moving to the UK or planning to do so, you will need to apply for a NINO through the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). It is necessary to obtain a NINO to legally study or work in the UK.

Although you can start working without a NINO, the law requires you to apply for one immediately, and your employer will ask for it.

How to Apply for a National Insurance Number

Follow these steps to get your UK NINO:

  1. Obtain a UK Address and Phone Number

To apply for a NINO, you’ll need a UK address and phone number. Ensure these are set up before starting your application. It’s possible to apply for a NINO once you’ve been offered a job, even if you haven’t started working yet, to expedite the process.

  2. Call the UK NINO Application Line

Begin the application process by contacting HMRC, which issues UK NINOs.

    • Telephone: 0800 141 2075

    • Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm

During the call, you’ll provide personal details, including your background and plans in the UK. After completing this, you’ll be given a date and time for an interview at your nearest Jobcentre Plus location.

  3. Attend the National Insurance Interview at Jobcentre Plus

At the interview, you’ll discuss your circumstances and reasons for needing a National Insurance Number. Bring the following documents:

    • Passport or identity card

    • Residence permit

    • Birth or adoption certificate

    • Marriage or civil partnership certificate

    • Driving licence

After the interview, you will receive a temporary UK NINO to start working, and you’ll be informed about the timeline for receiving your permanent NINO.
